Howl of the Carrion King Session XII
As the meet begins we find our Heroes standing exhausted but triumphant over the slain bodies of Kard’san and his Flind Lieutenant. As life fades from the fallen, Kard’san his face mysteriously transforms, losing the horrible scarring and revealing the visage of a Janni. This revelation begs the question, could Kard’san have been the legendary Templar Kardswann and if so what lead him from his path of righteousness into the arms of Rovagug. Unfortunately our Heroes have little time to ponder this event, for as they may have freed Kelmarane from the Kuldis, the treachery of Dashkii & the Three Jaws remained.
After securing Kard’san’s treasure horde (and some silken bed sheets for Ce-tan) the Heroes make their way downstairs, taking the head of Kard’san with them, to confer with the other survivors. A little scouting and discussions with the remaining mercenaries reveals that the Three Jaws have indeed taken up prime positions to ambush the Heroes upon their emergence from the Battle Market. After weighing their options the Heroes decide that they must fight their way through the Three Jaws or risk being trapped inside the Market.
Not waiting to be ambushed, Zafar leads the charge out the front doors of the Battle Market. With a prayer Sarenrea to forgive the breaking of our alliance, Zafar lands a smiting blow to Hargk, son of Narg the chieftain of the Three Jaws. As Hargk falls, a sorrowful cry is heard from Daskii, who comes charging in to join the fry (presumable from his position guarding the other exits). However Daskii comes not to aid our Heroes, but rather to avenge the fallen Hargk. The battle was intense, with gnolls surrounding our Heroes and arrows raining down upon them from the surrounding buildings. But our Heroes fought on valiantly, and after slaying a few Three Jaws and magically stunning Daskii the monstrous hyenas turned tail and fled, vowing that Narg would return to avenge his slain son.
After taking Daskii prisoner, the Heroes drag him back into the Battle Market for interrogation. Ce-tan puts the fear of Zon-Kuthon into Daskii, who proceeds to tell his true story. As a young boy Daskii was taken in by the Three Jaws after they killed his family. Raised among them, and then cast out when he reached adulthood, Daskii never felt right living among his human kin. When Daskii encountered the Three Jaws here is Kelmarane he quickly agreed to assist them in hopes of being able to return “home”. While the Heroes debated his fate Zafar tried to quell Daskii fear in hopes of finding him redemption. In the end the Heroes decide that Almah should decide his fate (apparently forgetting that she already signed his death warrant).
Returning to the Monastery, Almah is pleased to hear of our success, although saddened by the loss of Travass (whose body was returned to the Monastery). Almah reminds the Heroes that she has no desire to ever again set eyes upon the treacherous Daskii and cares not for his fate. After discussing what to do, the Heroes decide to give Daskii over to the will of Sarenrea by letting him meet the sun, exiling him into the desert.
After thanking them for their service Almah reveals that she has one more task that she would ask of our Heroes. A task so rife with danger that she would not give it as an order, but rather asks that each Hero take it on willingly and free of their prior service obligations. After our Heroes agree to do what they can, Almah reveals one of Kelmarane’s darker secrets. A great evil once rose in the area, and while never defeated, the creature was imprisoned and sealed away beneath Kelmarane’s church of Sarenrea. Almah produces a family heirloom, the key to the creature’s prison. Almah can offer little information on what form this evil had taken, but surely after generations of imprisonment the creature must be in a weakened state. Before Kelmarane can truly be resurrected the creature must be permanently vanquished, and such is the task she lays before our Heroes.
While each has their own reasons for taking on the task, our Heroes agree to venture forth once more into Kelmarane and free it from the evil lurking below her sands.
